Cleaning Food Grade Aluminium and Steel Ideas?

Post: # 83168Post Ireland-or-bust »

Hi,

I have just bought two items that need a REAL good clean but i have no idea on what i need to do.

First i have a cream seperator made of stainless steel.
However, its rusted in many places inside and out, all surface rust.

Secondly i have just bought a milk churn made of aluminium.
Its oxidised a bit inside and out.

Anyone got a clue on how to clean them up for food use again?TIA

Mark.

For the stainless steel... I'd start with steel wool and washing up liquid...

But just for your information...
the acid in onions is supposed to clean rusty knifes
boiling some rhubarb in a pot is meant to lift the rust (again the acid)

I don't know if any of that is possible, as I am not sure what shape a cream seperator is.

As for the aluminium

I would't even attempt it... I don't trust Aluminium food thingys... especially if they are already corroded.

Isn't stainless steel meant to be, well... stainless? I mean, shouldn't it be imperveous to rust?

As for rust remover: coca cola and brillo pads?

Don't use aluminium for food either, so wouldn't know about that.

Good luck,
Jandra

Try vinegar or HP sauce on both. Me I've used aluminium all my life but I can't remember a thing

Cheers, Paul

stainless steel is not impervious to rust. if an already corroded piece of ferrous metal is rested against it or used in a mosing part then it will begin to eat into the stainless surface. unfortunately once this happens you have a job keeping it stainless. you'll need to try and polish out the rust, and I don't think astonish will do the trick.
