A Right Royal Snub

Post: # 81439Post Jack »

Gidday,

I am disgusted. Your Royal Family that is supposed to also be our Royal Family has given a Right Royal Snub to Kiwis.

Sir Edmond Hillary, Knighted by old Liz Herself has died, and not even one member of the Roal Family has the decency to bother to turn up at his funeral.

Poor old Sir Ed was the world's most famous mountaineer, as well as the first man to reach the South Pole in a mechanised land vehicle when he beat fancy big snow cats in little modified Fergy farm tractors in 1958 or something like that.

He must have been if not the at least one of the greatest and most loved Kiwis of all time and has been spoken of fondly by the Queen on several occassions. Just shows you how flowery what she says is.

But somehow, she thinks a little ceremony over there put on in some posh place is enough as it's not worth the effort for even the most minor member of her family to come out here for his actual funeral.

I and most other decent Kiwis are disgusted by the total lack of common decency. Never has there been a bigger boost been given the the anti Royal rebublicist movement out here, and this was given by Her so called majesty herself.
Cheers

Apparently, she's 'upset' at the news.

I like our royal family, but i do see the problems that are going to be caused by their ections on this occasion.

I didn't even know he was a Kiwi....... and I certainly don't see why the Royal Family should have to attend his funeral??? If they did, they'd be slated for air travel anyway!

I have always liked the royal family, Charles as my favourite but one thing i think we should all realise is that they don't REALLY live in the real world, they live behined huge protected walls security cameras and have little people to do things for them, every now and then they get told certain relevant information and even told how to act upon it .
so really we should'nt be suprised by thier lack of action.
Yes sometimes we feel let down by them but when you think about the reality of it its up to us the NORMAL bods who care for the truly great people of this planet to remember them.
all the best

I have/had a lot of respect for Sir Edmund, and his passing is a great loss, the royalty absence from his funeral is not representative of me, (he also earns extra brownie points from me as he was also a beekeeper, but I digress...) but rather than what a few of one family think, its more important the the 'commoners' like myself mark his passing with quiet refection on his achievements. I'll happily raise a glass to him, a great Kiwi indeed.

Kind thoughts
Deb

Nope sorry, not true.

They have acknowledged his death and are going to hold a service in the UK. Seeing as a huge part of our population is probably in London, I think that's good. I would like it even more if a royal representative of some description turned up to that service though.

The first I heard of it was yesterday in a small section of our local paper, so I wouldn't say it is damaging to the monarcy. There are probably strict protocols in place as to what prior arrangements can be broken to attend funerals coz I imagine that someone important in the world dies every day or two and if they disrupted their scheduled visits etc that often ...

He spelled his name Edmund, but perhaps that's just being pedantic. I hardly see the fuss about the Royal family coming here anyway, they have a representative in the country full time, in the Governor General.

Personally, I think it is only the media that feels snubbed, and only because of all of the time and energy they could waste on reporting it. This country and it's push for republicanism has snubbed the royals many times, the rudeness and arrogance of the PM at every royal occasion is a classic example.

I don't think Sir Ed would have wanted such a fuss, and I hardly see what value a royal visit would add. It would have been nice if someone came, but its hardly the end of the world.

Cheers

crumbs,, I am surprised anyone in NZ was bothered by the movements of the royal family - I know I'm not.

As for Edmund Hillary, if he was interested in the Royals, then it would mean more to him that Queenie met him when he was alive (which she did) than attended his funeral. She knighted him at the time of his climb, and then some 40 years later awarded him with the order of the garter.. which, apparantly is a very high award, so was he snubbed?

The news was big when he died, and there were many tributes. I don't think much of mountain climbing.. its about personal achievement/competitiveness, but I understand Hillary did a lot for Nepal in his life time, and was a pleasant and modest man and so admire him for this. as he was very much celebrated in the UK, it only seems approprate to me that a service should be held here too.

An Australian friend has told me that in the Australian constitution there is actually a clause or something that would be NZ very easy to add as another state ... is that true?

Mirs Wild Flower, I think it's stretching thing a bit to claim that a large part of our population lives in London. but that's besides the point.

I counldn't agree more with that little statement Mr. Mushy Peas. But again that aint the point I am trying to make.

There is going to be a big State Funeral for probably the greatest Kiwi known. A State Funeral and the Queen can't even be bothered sending a rep other than Helen's little lackie in Wellington, and the Queen is, or at least is supposed to be our Head of State.

That is a right royal snub in my eyes and I don't give a stuff about what the media says.

And Nev, go back to sleep over there in West Island.
