Cranks flapjack recipe...HELP!

You all seem to be such proficient chefs. Well here is a place to share some of that cooking knowledge. Or do you have a cooking problem? Ask away. Jams and chutneys go here too.

Cranks flapjack recipe...HELP!

Post: # 80724Post Clara »

Seems like my copy of Cranks first cookbook has been destroyed  by a certain minky-monkey-moo. Oh well it was about to biodegrade anyhow

Please can someone post me the recipe for their flapjacks - I think it is page 198

TIA, Clara x.

My copy of this book falls open at this page...

Flapjacks

Butter or marg 5 oz (150g)
Brown sugar 3 oz (75g)
Black treacle 3 oz (75g
Porridge oats 8 oz (225g)
Salt, pinch

Melt butter, sugar and treacle in a pan. Mix in the oats and salt and sitr. Pressinto an 8 in square tin and smooth over the surface with a palette knife. Bake at 190 (375/gas 5) for 25-30 mins. Mark into portions whilst still warm.

Obviously you need to double the quantities as one lot lasts about 5 minutes in anybody's house.

(BTW, I hate the new Cranks books. I have this old one and another, Entertaining with Cranks and they are still in use after 25 years, even though I am no longer a vegetarian. The new ones are fiddly and fussy and the food's just not brown enough!!!)

I'ver been looking for a decent 'proper' food veggie cookbook for ages. Is this one good?

It gets good reviews on Amazon, specifically The Cranks Recipe Book - rather than the other 15000 variations

Any other better thoughts?

Looking for stuff like:-
Veggie chilli (that isn't just soya mince)
Veggie burgers (like wise)
Veggie Lasagna (ditto)
Vegge stews
Etc

I have developed my own recipies but I'd like a decent book to get insperation from.

Thanks for that....duly written in my special book!

Now then, I just realised that the recipe for pastry made with oil (instead of butter) has ceased to exist too......could you oblige....cheers.

AnnPan, I would recommend the Cranks book as it is far too much of a classic to not be on anyone´s shelf, though it is far from my favourite, some of the recipes are very dated, most are definitely wholefood as opposed to healthfood (lots of butter and brown sugar - yum) and the "aren´t we fab" tone of the authors makes me want to batter them with a raw steak

I would nominate Madhur Jaffrey´s World Vegetarian as a good source of inspiration, it´s vast and covers virtually every ingredient you can think of - which has helped me to expand my repertoire no end. Initially I find her irritating (perhaps it´s just me, maybe I have a deep seated problem with cookery writers  ), because she is so particular about the way everything has to be cooked.......but I´ve got over it because I realised that she´s right!

If it is still in print, Vegetarian Kitchen, by Sarah Brown is good I think. And Rose Elliot is ever popular, although I find a lot of her recipes uninspiring.
