Got my Aloe through this morning (well actually 12.30pm, the postal service here is shocking) It ought to have got here last Wed, but the postman was away by the time I got to the door

Anyway, I have popped it in a pot - I have yet to get the feeling back in my fingers, as I had to go outside and the compost and pots were frozen solid. I hope the wee fellow survives :?

My house is really cold I don't have a thermometer but I don't think it has got above 5oC for the last few days - Does anyone know if it has a chance of survival? I have put it in the bathroom where some of my plants seem to thrive in the steam of the shower.

Anyway, thanks, I'll get something to you in the new year

Not sure - I've got one from last year that has eventually taken off and is beginning to thrive. I really didn't think it would survive. It hard virtually no root and got rained on outside Ina's house - I don't think that they like to get the leaves wet but check with someone who knows about these things.

I do know that we water them very sparingly in the winter time and more frequently in the summer. I am not sure that I would put mine in the bathroom for the reason that we water so sparingly in the winter.

I hope they survive for you.

That's pretty good - our post doesn't get delivered until after 3pm at the moment! Usually it's between 12 and 1pm.

I have an aloe in the kitchen; it's usually between 8 and 13 degree in there (the latter when I turn the booster on and do a bit of baking...). I can't say the aloe thrives, but it survives.

Jeez Ina! I thought I'd got quite good at surviving the cold but when the temp dropped to 15C in my kitchen I put the underfloor heating on!

It's down to 13.5C in my bedroom (no heating in there) and I am getting such a cold forehead I'm going to wear a Wee Willie Winkie hat in bed now.

How do you manage to do anything in such a cold kitchen? I'd have numb fingers........

It's just a matter of what you are used to: I find it really cosy now, when I get into the kitchen and it's anything above 10! It also gives me plenty of excuses for having the odd toddy or two...

is that a challenge?

I think I'll move it out of the bathroom... doesn't sound like the right environment for it :?

I get numb fingers, it can get quite sore, my problem is only having cold running water to wash hands in, that is when my hands really ache.

Best solution so far (besides spending a small fortune on heating it with an electric heater) is to keep the oven on with a stew/ rice pudding/ apple pie in it, that keeps the room above 10oC, maybe even 15oC.

Annpan - when I worked out on the building site I found the best thing for cold hands was to let them get so cold it was really painful - so much so that I thought I'd be sick - then after about 5 mins of that (seems like and eternity!) they mysteriously warm up and stay that way all day!

It won't make us rich
But damn it how happy we'll be!

Milims, that sounds remarkably like the symptoms of hypothermia!!!
They're not weeds - that's a habitat for wildlife, don't you know?
