I can't help thinking we could be doing better on the self-sufficientish front ATM. All we have in the garden are leeks, parsnips, kale that is too full of flies to bother with and a tiny bit of basil in the greenhouse. The hens are barely laying, we have eaten all the cabbages and the Bramleys have been rubbish this year.

What have you lot got, particularly if you are in the UK as I would like some ideas for next year. How do you attempt to fill the hungry months?

Pork lol. Picked it up from the butcher today. Neither a herb or a veg though :oops:

Still got some toms to pick, some spinach and carrots. Leeks are way behind (my fault) but my cabbages are almost ready! (Inside the tunnel).

Dead loss really.

dug my first J. artichokes today, I only dug 2 plants and filled a bucket...

. also have parsnip, just finished picking and braising red cabbage, parsnips, sorrel, chives, and my one sad tiny butternut squash.

(TG that pork looks good.. envious here.)

In the veg patch I still have lettuce (lollo rosso and red oak leaf), radishes and rocket, plus coriander which is really hardy.

Winter veg - leeks, carrots, spinach beet and curly kale.

Just harvested my 3 parsnips which were the biggest I've ever seen, have prepared them for the freezer.

The kitchen windowsill has regular and Thai basil still growing.

Then I've got tons of butternuts and potimarrons in the cellar, 3 crates of apples in the garage plus some windfalls, and over 1,500 walnuts in a cupboard! :cheers: And we've just, yesterday, finished eating our Conference pears. :lol: I think there's still a few autumn raspberries out there too but I keep forgetting about them!

Apart from carrots, broad beans, runner beans & sweet corn from the freezer we are getting from the garden:
Leeks, Kale (Borecole), calabrese, dwarf french beans (under a cloche), peas, turnips, celeriac & spinach.
Just about to dig up JA and waiting for the swiss chard to get a bit bigger. Also have Oca and Ulluco still growing that I grew for the first time this year - will wait a few more weeks to start digging those up.

Still have some pumpkins and vegetable spaghetti sat in the conservatory windows too.

We have about 200+ Spartan apples in the garage too. The bramleys were no good this year - so different form last year when we had heaps of them.

I've got different herbs and aubergines and 1 tomato plant still in the unheated greenhouse. Oh and potatoes growing in a bin by the door for Chrimbo.

In the ground I've got fennel, lettuce (4 different types), rainbow chard, leeks, kale, swede, carrots, cabbage (3 different types), broccoli, calabrese, sprouts, early spring greens.

Got lots and lots stored for the winter etc.

Had a particularly large crop of cougettes, squash and pumpkin this year. I know I'm the lucky one cos most others seem to have had a rotten time with them.

Also had copious amounts of chillis.

Got to admit my tomatos were a disappointment though. Lots of them but very small. Grown in a greenhouse cos I've lost them too many times outdoors before to Blight and other diseases. Torbay is a warm, wet place.

I am so impressed by what you lot are growing. I have just been reading it all out to DH, who is now hankering after the allotments we gave up last year! There is just no time for them and our quite big garden at the moment, sadly.

Godfreyrob - is Otley in Suffolk? Do you have any connection with the college there?

Just dug up my last tatties - barely got out more than I put in. And the ones I put in were bigger, and had no blight or slug damage...

I still have a few turnips (purple tops) out there, and some kale plus Jerusalem artichokes. And a few salad leaves; but somehow I don't fancy salad in this eternal cold.

Its the Otley in West Yorkshire. So no connection with a college (just run my own courses).

Rocket, mizuna, radish, lettuce, celeriac, parsley and celery in the tunnel - kale, parsnip and swede in the plot, and rosehips just finishing in the hedge. The storage veg are just coming into their own now - I should take a walk at the weekend and see if I can't find some blewitts!

On the veg front, we have cabbages (which we've only just discovered sprout another head if you don't lift the whole plant!!!), cauliflowers, chard and spinach. There are a few peppers still coming through too.

Our efforts are now focused on the olives, we took our first batch to the press yesterday and returned with our best oil yet.

A few carrots left, quite a few leeks, kohlrabi, sprouts, parsley and thyme, chives and last few apples. Barn is full of veggies harvested during October, as is my freezer after 'harvesting' the pigs last weekend. Hanging room full of pigs hands and sausages curing, and boxes of bacon and legs salting. Chickens still laying well 5 -6 eggs a day from 8 birds.
Oh and a stray pheasant!

Not a bad year for a first attempt. Just need it to warm up enough that I can get outside with the rotavator during the day.

Also harvesting a great crop of horse manure!

Lots of parsnips and some carrots still in the ground, plus a small amount of brussels, poor crop.Plus loads of dried white and black and purple runner beans, some every day.
Best of all is foraged cooking apples, about a dozen trays should last until March
And in the freezer is green beans, runners and broads and french plus cherries plus rhubarb. Not a big meat eater, so could probably switch orf the freezer as enough outside and in store.
Leave only footprints..take only photographs and wabbits.

Hmmm, let's see.... silver beet, 5 kinds of lettuce, bok choy, beetroot and greens, spring onions, radishes, carrots, artichokes (purple de jesi), and heaps of herbs (chervil, coriander, parsley, chickweed, fennel, angelica, sage, marjoram, thyme, bay, oregano, mints, chives... I'm sure I'm forgetting a few of those). Lost nearly all the stonefruits in a very late hard freeze, which just crisped the just-setting fruit. :( The apple crop looks to be a small one, but the trees do one great year and then seem to take a break the following year. Strawbs are loaded with blossoms, and now we just some more rain and warmer weather so they can set. Oh, and it's dairy season again, full on, with 1 cow and 8 goats in milk, so making as much butter and cheese as we can while the milk flows freely. And there are far too many roosters around here (more than 30 at last count!), so I feel another cull day coming on.... :roll:
