Books...

Post: # 77168Post multiveg »

[rant]
Walked down into town today to return a Tom & Jerry DVD to the library. On route, I went into a bookshop to see if they had any nice books. I came across two - Bob Flowerdew's Going Organic & 1001 ways you can save the planet. I noticed one was printed in China and the other in Singapore. Buying that book won't save the planet. A green-ethos book in the library (didn't note name) was printed in the UK.

Am now a bit disappointed with Bob. Had a look on my bookshelf (the org. bible and the no-work...) - both printed in Singapore, as is the complete book of veg, herbs & fruit.

A disillusioned MV.

edit - spelling mistake. boof indeed!

Me too. But its the ones that "promote" green-ness that annoy me if they are printed other side of world...
I have found a number of UK printed books. A couple of others printed in the EU. An American book printed in US.

That seems odd as you do get somewhat of a say in where your book is printed. Ours will be printed in the uk; in fact in Frome just up the road from us which we are well happy about.

However, saying that we would have loved to be able to ensure that the inks were all vegan and made from soya and that we only used recycled paper. It is not but we have insisted on FSC paper and emails instead of print outs for correspondence.

This is not going to happen as economically speaking it would mean our book might not be published as we are a bit of a commodity. They have to make money out of us and we are unknown and as such a bit of gamble.

I guess what I am trying to say is that it might not have been down to the authors of the books you mention as to where they are printed or indeed anything to do with the book after the text has been submitted. But if the book contains decent info then it may still be great it is just that it has been wrapped up in the whole roundabout of publishing.

Right probably have to edit some of this at some point to keep my job.

You are just setting off on your career as a writer, though, Andy. Bob F has enough clout to insist on very stringent environmental standards.

There are a lot of highly illustrated, coffee table books on environmental lifestyle around now - it is fashionable this week to be green (the only time in my life I have been remotely in vogue). Just off to check some of mine now!

Excellent! The first one I grabbed, Saving the Planet without Costing the Earth by Donnachadh McCarthy, is printed in Norfolk on 100% recycled paper.

An excellent book, btw.

Hmm, The Gaia Natural House Book, printed in Hong Kong, no mention of the paper being recycled.

(don't worry, I am not about to go through my entire bookshelf!!)
