Donate some rice

Post: # 74962Post Thomzo »

For all you home-eders (and everybody else) here is a game to play to improve your English. The more points you get, the more rice you donate.

http://www.freerice.com/index.php

And nowhere does it say that you can't cheat and use a dictionary.

I've been playing it for two days (with a little sleep in between). Mr. QuakerBear consistantly gets two points more then me as his top score and I know he's going to beat me to 50. Ggggrrr. Good link though.

After more playing on this site I've realised all is not as good as it at first appeared. Many of the spellings and deffinitions are American. Also some of the deffinitions are abit odd e.g. amah = wet nurse! and offal = disgusting waste!

Any suggestions for sites which will improve my spelling?

Thanks for posting that - one of the few web quizzes I've found challenging. Yes, there were some Americanisms, but that makes it all the better in my view as it stretches your vocabulary still further.

I managed to donate 640 grains of rice before getting stuck on chirk (cheer). No dictionary. Vocab 49 - it was 50 until I hit chirk.

I suspect it helped that the quiz seems to have been put together by someone like me! I kept getting medieval arms and armour, medical terms and words with classical roots.

I'll have to try again later.

I have visions of some poor sod having to count out grains of rice! Might be good for Andy's insomnia...I was enjoying it until the screen froze. Will have another go in a min.

Dear EE,

You have to keep playing, I'm on day three and each day my top score goes up by one.

Have to go and play now...
