Thanks for all your suggestions. We have a health and safety meeting here today (I'm the union rep on that, so I'll have to attend anyway), and I'll raise the question. The manager is determined to prove that it's got nothing to do with the flooding... Probably because he promised to do something about the drainage last year and never did!

That certainly looks interesting! That would show whether the dampness really is in the wall, rather than in the air...

Anyway - the minutes of the meeting will show that I have been promised the drainage will be sorted within the next 6 months, plus something will be done about the house (including a wood burning stove). So there's light at the end of the tunnel!

That's great news Ina, I hope you don't need to fight them anymore.

Thanks, Ann - I've just been sick of being promised stuff that then gets "forgotten" about... Now I have it in writing, in the minutes! I'l still have to do something about the house for now; a think I'll go round and wash everything down with teatree oil this weekend, for a start.

Tea tree oil, thats a great idea... why didn't I think of that. I was cleaning the mould off of the bathroom ceiling with Milton Sterilising Fluid (diluted) I hate bleach - the toxicity, the smell, the risk of stains, etc. I shall use tea tree oil and see if that works, smells nice too

My dehumidifier arrived this morning so it is currently buzzing away, doing it's thing. It uses very little electricity, I thought it would be more like a heater but it seems much more efficient. We have a wee flashing red light on our meter and you can see it go barmy when you boil the kettle or have the shower running.

It appears to be collecting water nicely, I'll leave it running over night and see how we are doing in the morning. I'd imagine it'll take a few weeks before it really makes a difference, but we'll see.
