you have to use the code [/quote] at the end of the bit that you want to be in a nice little box, you can go back and edit it

OK you have to go into your profile and there is a box to tick that says always allow Bbcode.
That means you can do colours and quotes etc... if it is not that then I don't know what is wrong

I'd broadly agree with most of the anti-theft sentiments expressed, but...

What if you're a kid living in a shack. Your father's a drunken ratbag who's never around and drinks all the money he can blag, your mum is almost as bad although she does remember to feed you from time to time. You get toys and clothes from the tip, and nick food from the shops. When you're caught, you're charged, convicted and sent to a home.

Are the thefts really that wrong? (Real story.)

You're a father of three, barely making ends meet despite being a hard, honest worker. Your wife is very seriously ill, but you can't afford much treatment (this is a country with private medicine) other than rare visits from a doctor and a few pain killers. Eventually, at your wits end, you rob a bank and use all the proceeds on treatment for your wife. A couple of years later, plagued by guilt, you hand yourself in and are jailed for 10 years.

Right or wrong? And yes, another real story.

Another one. Your family is on the brink of starvation, your employer hasn't paid you in months as he's a b****** and finally you kill and eat one of his sheep. You go to jail for two years.

To bring it into the supermarket story, what if the shoplifter is ex-army, with psychological problems from his service, homeless and on the streets with no money. He nicks a loaf of bread, some ham, some cheese and a can of shoe polish to clean his shoes. He has a number of charges because he's done this a few times and you're a juror at his trial.

For some reason you have clicked the Disable HTML in the post option... and the Disable BBCode in this post. You may have done this in your profile? I don't think the HTML will cause a problem but if you've disabled the BBCode you won't see the fancy quote boxes. Try it yourself and see :D (use preview button to see your post before it appears on the forum and then confirm once you are happy with it)

I think you've raised some very interesting points there Stoney.

Sure they udget for it. Then they add onto the price of everything and all other customers pay, so infact you are steally from every customer regardless how little they can afford it.

There can be no justification.

Also, if you steal from a company it makes less profit. Less profit = less tax. Less tax = less money for the NHS, schools, social services etc.

Further, most of these companies are listed on the stock exchange. Most pension funds are invested in the stock exchange. Less profit = fewer dividends for the pension funds so you are stealing from your own parents and grandparents by denying them their pension.

Personally, I don't believe that any of these examples make stealing right. They do, however, highlight how badly society lets down the more vulnerable. I do think that the sentencing ought to reflect the circumstances. If the judges sometimes get the sentences wrong, it doesn't mean we should condone theft. Two wrongs don't make a right.

and baldowrie, don't worry, I won't. Theres not much really I would want to steal anyway, I make most of my own stuff, and pluss the whole moral issues.

But yeah, I've explained to my friend all this but he doesn't seem to buy it.

And to be honest, I can kind of understand, he left home at 15 and has been living in a shitty flat for god knows how long, I gues it just a way of surviving, but now he has money he still does it. He says he likes getting the rush, could be possable he's addicted...I don't really know.

Ah well. He'll probably get caught, which is a shame because most shops prosicute, and I'm sure it will be difficult to do collage or get a job with that on your record.

Yes it is possible to become addicted to stealing. I remember searching the house of a welthy business man because his wife had been caught shoplifting. There were two large bedrooms stacked almost to the roof with stolen goods and none had ever even been opened.
