vegetable spagetti
harvested our first today - I shall be sad as I have enjoyed checking in on 'the beast' and patting it.. weighed in at over 3 kg! delicious.
these are grown from the last of the seeds I have had for years - as really 1 plant is enough - giving pale green/yellow fruit.. and have also bought the 'new improved ' variety 'hasta la pasta' which have produced orange fruit. yet to find out what they are like though.. but nothing like as large. did find a source of the old seeds though.. so after the taste test.. we decide...
great veg to grow to get kids involved in veg.. spagetti like strands of flesh.. served with butter... fab.

yeh i thought about it.. but i am growing the new variety and pumpkins and courgettes.. and the squash family are a promiscuous bunch.. so the seed could be anything...Pilsbury wrote:always worth letting one get ripe and then saving the seeds, hang on I think I did that last year, I will have a look in the seed box tomorrow if i remember and see if i have any left if you like.
if you have some that are pure.. i could well be interested. yet to try the 'new improved variety' might be ok...

this is the plants

the 'bed' is a foot wide by about 5 foot long, and then we propped an old weld mesh gate up against the compost heap (which used to be a pig sty). Like most squash family, its a climber and has tendrils to hang on by. as you can see its sprawling out a bit.. we could have 'trained' it a bit. the fruit (you might be able to see a couple of pale green ones), are large and heavy and drag the plant down, but you can put them in a net support aranagement if you want. we have 3 plants in here.. so just one would take less space

now the plants look a bit past it, we decided to bring in the harvest - 4 large pale green (old variety) and 3 smaller yellow (new variety) we tried the new kind - 'hasta la pasta', and although its different - its good and the size is more managable.. the old variety would do more than 2 meals. There are still some small fruit out there... you never know.. might grow before the frost comes...
