potatoes and turnips

Post: # 69319Post Moomintroll »

This might sound a little naive. :?

I had some excellent pentland javelin potatoes (first earlies apparently) and had them out of the ground by the end of June.

Following the attrocious weather we had I was then left with bare earth on one of the vegetable beds. I put turnips in in sequential sowings but nothing has come up. Is it a bad year for turnips/ wrong rotation/ has anyone else tried this with success?

Hi Moomintroll
I'm sure there's someone here who can give you a better answer, but I don't see why turnips shouldn't follow potatoes. I usually do it the other way round though I'm not sure why now!! However, I can tell you that none of my turnips have come up either, though I've sown seeds several times since the spring. My guess has been the excessive number of slugs this year - and not just in France, my Dad's been complaining about them where he is in Derbyshire. Could this be the problem?

I've just taken over an allotment tha was spuds and have planted alsorts, including turnips. They are up but a bit slow, and a bit eaten by caterpillars.

Hope they appear for you

Are you trying to grow from seeds? Are the seeds flat like parsnip seeds? Soak them for 24 hours before planting them - it works for parnsips, I didnt get any last year, this yeat ive soaked and have hundreds. Worth a try eh?
