Boby shop founder dies

Saw this article this morning and whatever you think about the body shop being sold, I think that she made a real difference to reducing animal testing.

She also was a spokesperson for hepatitis C and HIV and went to the same university as me.

I think it's tragic that she died the way she did.

Its a shame that she died so suddenly, but i do feel that she sold off her beliefs when she sold TBS to L'Oreal. L'Oreal are well known for their animal-testing record in the past (they might not now...i don't use them anyway).

Its a sad day for those who knew and loved her though.

When I started work there weren't very many female businesswomen role models. She was one of my heros.

She may have died young but I think it's better to go young knowing that you have lived a full life and helped to change the world than live to be 100 and never have achieved anything. In that she is still a role model.

I was surprised nobody commented on this earlier.

I also thought what a blessing it was to die so quickly without hanging around in pain for ages. But it is very difficult for those left behind.

When my father-in-law died (in 20 seconds while trying to order drinks at the pub) on the day of the last full eclipse of the sun, we were left in shock for some time.

I think AR was a trailblazer and deserved all the accolades. I don't like the way she seemed to have 'sold out', too. But is this any different from a famous designer who's been championing organic cotton now designing for T***O?

There is always a hope amongst such ethical entrepreneurs that the tail would start to wag the dog (is that the right expression?), but my conclusion is: it is difficult. It is then up to us to support the smaller businesses, i guess, and hope that the founders do not tire and not sell out.
