Powering a mobile home

Post: # 69839Post the.fee.fairy »

Right, we're getting further and further into the planning to move stages. We have cardboard boxes packed already.

So...when i have my mobile home, i would like to power it using wind/solar. BUT i'm not rich...by any stretch of the imagination.

Is it possible? And can it be done in a not-too-expensive way? We're not sure where we're moving yet, so don't know about local council grants etc.

in a nutshell - forget grants for renewables, if you can get a grant on it, it'll be at least twice the price! (the grants are near impossible to get anyway) :?
Grants can sometimes be had from local authorities for insulation - a good move!
Then having insulated to the gills, sit down and do a really severe audit of your energy needs - the less you use, the less you have to generate.........
In a caravan, I could get by quite happily with a woodstove, a small pv (solar panel system) for electricity, with battery and controller feeding lights, small tv, car radio, laptop etc..........(all 12v). For cooking, heating, and refrigeration, forget electricity - you can cook on a woodstove, but most people settle for a bottled gas cooker and small fridge. If you're hardy and inventive, forget the fridge altogether, and cook and heat your water on the stove! :geek:
As solar pv produces far less in winter, they are often allied to a small wind turbine which " makes up" for the deficit in winter (less leaves on the trees in winter, and higher average winds!) - but it must be properly sited - on it's own mast, well away from any obstructions..........
http://solarwind.org.uk - a small company in Sussex sourcing, supplying, and fitting alternative energy products.
Amateurs encouraged - very keen prices and friendly helpful service!

Open plan, spacious interior....

But I am afraid to say you have but 3 hours to come and collect it before it ends up in the metal skip at the recycling centre in Dunbar :whax:
