Suburban veggie grower in Australia

Post: # 68861Post Lisa G »

Hi everyone! I'm Lisa G, and I heard about this site from a terrific forum on the Simple Savings website. (www.simplesavings.com.au ) Since joining them, I've started growing some of our food (with varying success.... who knew zucchini could grow as big as footballs???) and generally getting more into the reuse, renew, recycle thing.

I'm single with four boys rapidly diving into teenagerdom, so clean, cheap and natural food is becoming more and more important to me. We're suffering from a pretty incredible drought here at the moment, so clever watering of the veggies without wasting a drop is a priority.

I'm a teacher of English, and have discovered the charms of pottering about in the house and garden after work and at weekends, baking, growing and harvesting. The kids love the finished products, too!

Edited to add that the female pictured to the left is definitely not me!!! (I'm exactly like a supermodel........) :)

Hiya Lisa, and welcome to the Ishers!

I used to know a Lisa in Melbourne... But last time I heard from her, her surname didn't start with G, she was still married, and had at least one girl! Oh, and she was a paediatrician, not a teacher... So I suppose you aren't her.

Wish we could send you a bit of the water surplus Britain is suffering from this year; you'd be welcome to share with us.

Wow!

I feel so loved..... (sniff.....)

I'm in Bentleigh in Melbourne, which is down the road from Dandenong.

The boys are kind of eying the veggie garden with bemusement (if that's a word.) My eldest says that he doesn't believe I'll keep it up, so even though he helped with the digging and putting a fence around it (to keep out small boys chasing the footie) he is not yet getting into it like the others.

However, it's now moving into the second year of production, so he'll have to eat his words. Along with everything else we grow.

We're starting some pumpkin and peas from seed (the peas are an experiment. Whole dried peas from the supermarket. Apparenetly they're viable... we'll see) and we're planning a trip to Bentleigh market tomorrow to snap up some seedlings. I want to have things well established before September's end.... we're off to Phuket in Thailand for a week. Can't wait for the sun!!!!

Excellent diet!

Why - what happened to the sun in Australia that you are having to go to Thailand for it? It's supposed to be summer here - and I'm seriously contemplating getting out my winter socks today... My feet are like ice blocks! :pale:
