Can i put the old filter coffee granules in my compost heap. The coffee maker at work uses one packet a day with makes one jug of coffee. Is that going to be too much? Am I going to give my veggies a coffee high? I don't want to overdose them or have veggies that taste of coffee because they've absorbed it from the soil.
Starbucks give bags of grounds away especially for composting. Not sure how much would be too much - I suppose as long as it was well mixed in with plenty other stuff.....
Put some in the compost, and some on the garden directly. slugs and snails don't like it because the caffeine dried them out.
Also, mix it with compost for those plants that need acidic soil.
Coffee is great for the garden in good doses. I springle the starbucks grounds over stuff i have growing in the greenhouse - i've got a resident slug somewhere (a big, fat resident slug judging by the amount its eaten...) and it seems to stop his sliminess eating my baby plants!
We have an arrangement with the local cafe to take all their coffees grounds. It works well as the owner lives not far and drops it off end the end of the road once a week. We get about 7 carrier bags per week, plus all the coffee in the green waste I collect from work.
It is great stuff, we use it for a variety of things, it really helps moisture retention, so I mix in with potting compost and direct into the soil. I believe if you over do it, it will turn your soil a little too acidic, but you can always compensate for that with lime.
We also use it for encouraging top soil around the pool - grass takes a long time to re-establish here, so anything to cover the shingle is wonderful.
I hasten to add that for most gardens 5 carrier bags a week will probably be too much, but we don't have that problem if we end up with too much, I just start a new compost heap.
It is also great for mixing in with horse poo as I find that can often stay dry for a long time and take a while to rot down.
