Maybe they were meant as a defence against intruders??? If the spikes don't get them, they get their feet entangled in the 15 miles of greenery? Definitely a variety of triffid. They were quite nasty, too, weren't they...

I cut open my smallest and ripest looking Butternut last night and had some of it roasted. Not bad at all although it could do with a little bit more ripening, but I just had to have a look! I have them on a sunny windowsill inside at the moment and it looks so funny when the cats lie on the windowsill next to them!

My little green balls are a tiny bit bigger now and a darker green... But no real development.
