Hi All

Post: # 66214Post Granny in Wales »

Hi All just managed to get in on here.

I'm the wrong side of 50, a Granny, live in South East Wales about 45 miles from Paul who joined recently and told me about this forum.

I have a very large garden which is really too much for me to manage now especially as it has been waterlogged for most of the "summer" (what summer....?) my runner beans have failed for the second year. I have a greenhouse and am growing peppers for the first time, and have tomatoes coming on nicely, plus 40+ lavender plants growing from seed. Although my veg growing has been an utter failure, the flowers have been spectacular

I also keep ducks. I have six Khaki Campbells. Good layers when the sun shines but not when it is cold and miserable as it has been here for two months. If anyone requires well-rotted duck-manure please come and get some, bring your own bag and help yourself.

Will that do for an introduction?

Hi Annpan, not sure what I will do with all the lavender. I love it too and I lost my last lot which was planted in a big stone sink on my patio and my cats decided to sit all over it...

My great grandparents were farmers on the Nonsuch Estate at Cheam in Surrey almost a century ago - the farm grew lavender (the area was famous for it) which is where I suppose I have inherited my love for it.
I do have an ambition to take some of my lavender and plant on my Great-Uncle's grave in France. John Benjamin Cox, a Rifleman in the KRR was killed, aged only 17 in September 1915, buried at Laventie near Armentieres.

Hi Granny and welcome! I have ducks too - they are quite happy with this wet weather and laying far too many eggs!

my ducks don't appear to like the wet and they won't lay unless there is a lot of sunshine....

We dug them a pond which they would not go in...they now have four washing up bowls of water to keep their beaks and eyes clean and they often will stand in them and splash but as for "swimming"...oh no! If it's raining they huddle together in their house and won't come out.

I've been doing some stuff in the garden today as there is a brief lull in the rain. I have been finding a number of slugs and snails which I end up poking through the duck pen wire and the ducks are now standing about waiting for the next batch!

Hiya Granny, and welcome!

Your setup sounds a lot of fun... Cats that love lavender (sure it wasn't catnip  ), ducks that won't swim... I'd love a few Khaki Campbells, too, and I'm in the process (have been for a while  ) of digging out a little pond for them - maybe I should give up on that, if they won't use it anyway?

My ex-cat loved rosemary, btw - I think cats just love all sorts of nice smelly herbs!

As well as cats that like herbs and ducks that won't swim one of my cats is afraid of mice
