Well, when I started reading this, I thought "How stupid!" Then I thought more about it... my twin babies were born 11 weeks early, and I remember a lady walking through the NICU, looking at each baby, comparing birth weights, calling her husband over to see the tiniest, as if they were all in a freak show or something. It did upset me at the time. But regular babies, next to their mothers in the wards... I would probably be offended if people didn't coo over them!

This might be a stupid question - but how many beds/babies do you usually have in a maternity ward? I've only ever visited one woman and her newborn in hospital, that was in Germany, and the room had two beds. So there definitely weren't that many people around to coo over any baby.

The only things I coo over are baby animals and birds. So wouldn't be a problem with me around!

And yes, same thing Ina, I've only ever visited twice in Switzerland and each time they had a private room...... :?

Blimey, that's mad.

Infection control...well we live in such a sterile world, no wonder kids get ill and what have you. A bit of dirt never really hurt anyone and my boys are such grubby little things most of the time. Helps with the imune system, in my humble opinion. They get bathed once or twice a week and get a 'lick and promise' each night before bed on the other days.

When my babies were born I was in a ward of six babies and mums. Pretty noisy actually, especially when you are totally knackered from having your offspring. But I didn't mind other visitors being sweet and having a gawp at my monster 10lb 3 oz baby! :flower:

Gosh, has that baby grown in the same fashion since then?

Which reminds me - we had a lamb that was 7 kg. Which is 15 lbs and a bit in old money... And the mother was only 60kg or so, which is about an average weight for a woman, too. Sorry, a bit off the thread - but it probably makes you grateful for a baby of "only" 10 lbs!

Well, I opted for the surgical removal of this monster. He's actually as thin as a whippet these days. (he's 5) After my first baby of 36 hours of labour then a cesar, I thought it more sensible to take this option.

Sorry fellas, not talking vegatables and hens here. But it's life as we know it!

There I was thinking "OW"!! My ma in law (all of about 5 foot 2) is proud that her two lads were about 10 pounders - and she did it the normal way and not much in the way of pain relief in those days! Double ow!
