Can I ask a stupid question about tomato plants???

Post: # 64610Post Millie »

Mums on hols and I was weeding round her BBeans, and I noticed shes got loads of tom plants shot up all of a sudden. She had toms on that patch last year, but neither she, nor I, realised they came back the following year! Is this a freak, or do they come back year after year? I had wondered if it could be from fallen toms, but shes dug that bit over and over, wouldnt have thought they would have survived.

Anyway, Im now embarrassed, so Im off

I regularly find that I do quite badly at getting tomato seeds going and then get my small collection supplemented by ones that pop out of the ground; I think they produce a lot of seeds that are fairly hardy and so it is not surprising that a few plants sneak their way back into the system.

Hurrah for nature!

I always have tomatoes coming up everywhere from the home made compost, and a lot of pumpkins too!

Yes our entire tomato patch I didn't sow this year but chucked on a load of compost the previous owner had left - dozens of plants - they did better than the ones I sowed

I always have tomatoes come up where they were last year. And actually they are often the strongest- late but good survivors against the odds!

Yup, I agree with the rest, tomatoes readily self seed, I get plenty self sown, direct and in the compost!

Ive moved them alongside the other toms, only one looked happy about it, so I shall see how they go.

 I have another 'stupid' question about tomatoes. Hope you don't mind me hijacking your thread, Millie?

How long do tomatoes take to start turning red? Mine seem to have been green forever. Ok, so three weeks or more. And I have fed them and given them lovely manure too. Plenty of water or rain.

3 weeks isn't very long! Give them more time!

(Do you have any sunshine where you are? It helps! )

Also water the ground around the plants, not the foliage as this can lead to splitting of fruit in very hot weather.

You are lucky! And in no time at all you will be overrun with beautiful tomatoes and everyone in north western Europe will be really jealous because most people lost theirs to blight!

oh dear
mind you, I've just lost my spuds to blight too, despite better weather conditions, so my sympathies are with you.
On a brighter note though, I just found that one tomato is now that lovely in-between orange colour - hooray!
