lettuce!

Post: # 64947Post kimbobill »

Hi,
I used a reallt large pot as a seed bed for lettuce as they got bigger I pricked out the biggest and potted these up seperatly into individual pots and into the soil,
The funny thing is the ones still cramed in the seedbed are fighting for the space and really growing fast and making plenty of leaves to pick and the one's that have been pricked out are growing but much slower!

I think next time I'll try direct sow to see if the tranfer affected them (although they had a plenty of soil around the roots) if not, making them fight for space might give more and quicker?

anyone else found this

Kim

Yes, I've found this. The more root-bound they get the more they seem to produce. I don't have much success growing lettuce in the ground for one reason or another so I tend to sow them in pots and then leave them to it. If you keep chopping off the tops they come again, even the varieties that are supposed to form a heart. I found this out because my other half is not too good with plant labels.

I find that transplanted lettuce gets set back a few weeks but that is a good thing because you don't want it all ready at the same time!
