A little story about Limoncello...
When we first arrived to live in Italy, we found a recipe (in Italian) for Limoncello. It included zucchero (sugar, easy, we knew that one), limone (lemons, again something we knew), alcool (alcohol, easy to translate if you just squint your eyes), and 1 mese (hmmm...)
So off we trundled to the shops and bought what we needed. Except the mese. We asked in several shops but nobody seemed to sell it. What's more they all laughed at us.
After a while our Italian improved enough to understand that 'mese' means 'month'.

And what's more I've found a recipe that only takes a week to make, rather than one mese! If anyone's interested let me know.
I've just discovered how to make another digestivo using basil leaves - really nice and fresh tasting.
Digestivo al basilico
500g alcool (or cheap vodka)
500g sugar
500g water
30 basil leaves
Infuse the basil leaves in the alcool for 24 hours
Slowly heat the sugar in the water
When tepid add to the booze.
Filter then bottle and drink.
