My vote would be for a scythe although you need a decent lengths of grass for this to work although I haven't used one for years. I use a grass hook for our small lawn, the kids do a pretty good job of keeping most of it tramped down. A scythe, grass hook and push mower all need to be kept very sharp. My experience with modern push mowers was disappointing I bought one three years ago, it barely outlasted it's warranty. Plastic cogs driving the blade!!! I've been looking for a vintage model in decent nick ever since.

There were several vintage models on ebay but most were uplift only or the postage far outwayed the benefits of getting one, maybe one will come up in your area though, its worth keeping a look out if you are in no hurry.

Hi, I would recommend a scythe, With a bit of practice and instruction I was soon cutting all my overgrowth to size and in total silence, best buy for years. Google scytheconnection, I found the site their most helpful.
