Greetings from North Wales

Hi all,

I've been visiting the selfsufficientish website sporadically for a number of months now and browsing the forums fairly avidly for a week or so, and decided I'd now like to start participating in the discussions.

While I'd like to be completely self-sufficient, it's not really a very practical goal for me. However, I try to be self-sufficientish, growing some of my own food and recycling or reusing things wherever possible.

I live in a flat in Bangor and am fortunate enough to have control of the garden. While it isn't huge, there's enough space to grow a few vegetables and herbs as well as flowers. I moved in just over a year ago and didn't do anything much to the flowerbeds last year as I wanted to see what was in them. I did, however, start a small herb garden in containers and I also grew a few spuds in bags of compost supported by some makeshift frames (a couple of old bedside cabinets I found in the garage).

This year I'm trying to expand my herb garden a bit and I've also set aside a small patch of the garden to try growing some carrots, rocket, radishes and garlic (and I'm planning to plant a few beans in the next couple of days as well). I didn't get round to any planting (or much gardening at all) until a couple of weeks ago (inspired, no doubt, by helping in my dad's garden on a visit to my parents the previous week) and was delighted this morning to find my first few radishes starting to appear.

Robin, I particularly like the first quote in your signature. For the past several days I've been wondering about going round to see my neighbours and offering to deadhead their hydrangeas in the front garden, since most of the blooms are dead. Perhaps when I've finished working on my own garden, I'll get round to it...

I know the feeling of itchy fingers when you see something that's needing done! Shame is, I tend to overlook the things that need doing in my own garden. Or rather, I'm so used to them, that I don't see them anymore...

Thanks to everyone for the welcomes since I last thanked everyone for the welcomes!

I've just discovered that even us newbies can set up our own avatars (for some reason I thought that was a privilege reserved for those who'd risen through the ranks of the Good Life cast). I've selected for myself a picture I took this afternoon (actually, yesterday afternoon, looking at the clock ) of a garlic shoot from a clove I recently planted in my garden. I thought it was an appropriate image to start with since (a) it's growing in my garden and (b) it's new and green.
