Parsnip obsession!!

Post: # 58694Post chadspad »

I hate having to thin things out, even tho I know it benefits the remainder by being able to grow better and bigger. Add this to the fact that I LOVE parsnips and having only got 1 from 7 packets last year and all of them coming up this year, I have been loathe to thin them out too much. Now I have a problem, see below!

I have been spending the last week transplanting them to another bed cos I still can bring myself to throw any away - obsessed or what???

I love the look of your beds!! They're so pretty!

I've done the same with tomatoes this year - even those that looklike they're about to die have been carefully transplanted to bigger pots...

Thanks Fee Fairy. We are sick of trying to find ways to use the limestone up now!

Thinning is defintely hard to do when theres potentially another veg there eh?

Its too difficult!! I think its because i plant seeds thinking 'i'll put a few extra in in case they don't all grow' and then i get surprised when they all do, then it seems like a waste of the hard work put in by that little seed to throw it away!!

Oi Chadspad, I've got your last year's problem! Only three germinated from a 4 metre long row. Never mind I have enough in the freezer to last a good long time!

Jack No its not its just the stones but it certainly looks like one eh - well spotted lol!

M3 - I soaked all my seeds first except for one line - they didnt come up at all but all the others have - it definitely worked!

Hmmm interesting, I thought it was because April was too warm but perhaps it is more that April was too DRY.... although I did water them a lot but maybe that wasn't enough. April is usually pretty wet.

Ho well I should get out there now and sow some more because it is very soggy here now!

I know what you meant Chadspad, I meant that it was so wet the other day it would have been pointless soaking the seed first!

Having had removed about 10 tons of limestone from my last garden, do you want any ideas how to use the stuff? (it wasn't a big garden either)

Sorry M3 - Im sure u know what I meant

Possum - have built walls, paths & raised beds. My house and all the outbuildings are constructed of limestone. If u have some other ideas share them pls.

Well raised beds were one for us, another because our limestone split into flat-ish pieces was to turn them on end and use them as edging, also the smaller stuff we dug out we collected to one side and used as gravel, another lot was put as harcore base for putting a shed on, some was put on the tops of pots to reduce evapouration
I also had the idea of building a limestone folly in the corner of the garden as well.
I'll try and think how else we used it.

We now have the a similar problem with huge amounts of volcanic dark grey stone

I have been desperately trying to thin out and replant my parsnips but most arent taking. If I didnt thin them would they not grow very big or would some grow but others not? I just cant throw them away - it seems such a waste!

I sowed a 30m row, and not a seedling to be seen. Plenty weeds though which got a thorough harrowing today along with the rest of the plot.

I will soak the second attempt though and fingers crossed!

Parsnips don't much like my heavy soil anyway, but wee ones are better than none!
