Good plan M3 - thanks for that info.

We've just had a shower but still need more - lots more.

Aha - thanks M3. That is interesting. Will have to invest in a rain gauge.

Cheers

So you know how great Salsify is as a veg, what about Cavero Nero, great leaves all through the winter , then in Spring sprouting broccolli like flowers! Takes up half as much room as broccolli

Of course, when it does rain, that means more slugs and snails come out to play! Still, I'm hoping for more of the wet stuff this week even if it does mean I have to make my, er, crop protection rounds (*) more frequent.

My joy and enthusiasm for the rain was not shared by my more mundane colleagues this morning.

However the ground has now had a good soak in sustained steady rain  Hopefully we'll get some more, it's dried out for the time being. Also seems to have had a good impact on the river too.

Better double check the gutters and get water butts installed.

This morning I took off some more of the small polytunnels I'v been using. I'm not entirely convinced how much good they do and they get in the way of natural watering via rain and also my slug-hunting. Certainly the plants in there are now large enough to survive without them - it would be tragic to have them die of thirst when there has been plenty of this glorious water falling from the sky!

Oh you lucky people. All we had was very strong wind and a lovely big elm tree was fallen this morning. It had just missed my dear ancient apple tree plus several other trees by cms........ and the house!

It was so close to the house it could have done some really serious damage, not to mention it would have come pretty close to me in bed during the night!

Still, lots of nice free firewood!

Oh M3 - that must have been pretty scary :pale: . Thank goodness you are alright. The firewood is a silver lining though.

Cheers all. The tree is now chopped and split and stacked and hasn't made anywhere near as much firewood as we'd hoped, because despite the fact it was 40 foot tall the kind of elms here are rather slimline! Never mind though, we didn't have to pay for this wood.

A good load of wood for the winter then?

We're trying to garden in mud with rivers running down it on a 45 degree slope! Much slapstick fun until we gave up and came inside for a (warm) shower.
