I always grow mint in large pots and sometimes sink the plant pot into the ground, but leave about an inch or two above the ground or the suckers will get in the ground and root. It keeps the plant pot cool and retains moisture a bit more that way. Every two or three years I'll dig up what is in the pot, take a bit of mint plus root out and restart the plant again.

I also contain lemon balm and lovage in pots... Lovage can get huge - your 2x4 wouldn't be large enough for that! But in a pot it stays nice and manageable.

Sage is a wonderful plant, too; some varieties have lovely flowers, and the leaves feel interesting - a bit rough velvety, if you know what I mean! Probably not. I'm not the best at describing this.
