I'm back!!!!!

Post: # 5411Post green-girl »

Hi everyone!!!

I'm back! I'm alive!.... but unfortunately my poor garden suffered through my illnesses and then end of financial year...

So it's start again basically - I can only save some of the tomatoes, strawberries, carrots, parsley & shallots .... it's bye bye to the radish, snow peas, beans (although the sp & beans aren't really my fault entirely - I think it really was the wrong time of year - they were dying even before I got sick)

Can anyone help me to find exactly what plants I should be planting RIGHT NOW here???

Anyway... so glad to be b ack :dave:

Hi Green Girl,

How are you now? I do hope you are feeling better. Never mind about the garden, your health takes top priority. A little gardening will be good for you though!

Nev should be able to help you out with planting in Aus. I haven't seen him around recently...

OY NEV ~ IN HERE PLEASE!!!
If in doubt ~ use a hammer!

Good to see you back. Yeah, I was thinking of Nev, too - is he on holiday? Or is there an epidemic of something or other in Australia - I hope not!

With your climate, can't you sow or plant almost anything now that has a fairly short growing season?

Anyway, don't overdo it straight away. I'm a bit "handicapped" (or rather footicapped... ) at the moment, and I'm afraid it's the slugs that benefit from that. Just about managed to do a bit of watering when it was too dry; the rest will have to wait.

Sorry Guys,

I have been a bit pre-occupied recently......back in Feb we had a friend and work colleague killed in a building collapse on one of our sites :( .......well the same thing has happened again :pale: (no one hurt this time, the system works!) but I have been busy with the WorkCover (H&S Exec in the UK) and legal ramifications. I promise to be around more.

Green girl! My bible for this sort of stuff is the Yates Garden guide which has a matrix for what, how much, when etc. My copy (2002) says that for tropical/subtropical Aus, the following can be sown (August) - Beans (Dwarf and climbing); Beetroot; Broccoli;Cabbage; capsicums; carrots;Chinese cabage; choko; cress; cucumbers; Lettuce; marrows; melons; onions (spring); parsnips; potatoes; punkins; Radishes;Silver beet; sweet corn; tomatoes & zucchinis! So take your pick.

Hi Green-girl - glad to see you back here again. Hope you are feeling OK now.

I would have thought that a Queensland winter would be much the same temperatures as an English summer - therefore you could grow just about anything! Then you can grow the yummy interesting tropical stuff in your summer. Lucky you, or perhaps not, if you don't get a break from it all!

Thank you everyone for your kind wishes - yep I'm back on track now. I feel so much better!

And Nev, you're a champ - great list! Thanks so much - I'll be off shopping for some of those tomorrow! I am sorry about the accidents and what-not though :( Hope it all turns out okay.

It appears I have been able to save the spring onions, lettuce mix and strawberries and onions seem to be okay too - surprising, I didn't think I'd save any of it!

But as you guys say, health has to come first.

I had a great day today - I made up all of my environmentally friendly, chemical free cleaners and cleaned away! I actually feel like I accomplished so much. In reality, I probably did no more than usual, but I've just looked forward to getting it all done in one day and all exactly the way I like it for so long - it was nice to not have to spread it out over 3 days and 15 naps!

Sadly my finances are still suffering from medications and no work, following by an unbelievable number of bills suddenly appearing at my place, so I'm on a major REDUCE ALL COSTS rampage. Haven't even been able to get the hot water back on from being ill yet - so that's 2 months Monday! From cutting up and freezing veges so they aren't wasted, to reducing the meat that I eat each day (by having more rice etc), to completely eliminating any take-out food whatsoever... if it's a money saving opportunity, I've had to take it :? Not always with pleasure, but a must these days. I've found that some have been things that I should have been doing all along (like the freezing veges thing), but I didn't even think about despite my quests to a more environmentally friendly and 'waste not want not' life... always great in hindsight  so at least I'm still seeing positives to it all despite the negatives.

The car is stuffed - to put it nicely - got the cheapest price possible (this is at cost price for the parts through a friend) and it's still $320. HEH. That's all I can say about that.
