How long do potatoes usually take to sprout through the soil

Post: # 53997Post mew »

Hi all

I planted my earlies 2 weeks ago and my mains 1 week ago. I created a small mound on top (as is suggested in many "how tos") and I just wondered how long it usually takes before they start to poke through?

First time going veg so everything is unknown to me at the moment. - hence lots and lots of probably (!!) silly questions.

Many thanks

No such thing a silly question.

My second earlies have just started to poke through and I planted them on 2/3/07. Which was perhaps a tad too early, remember things will start to speed up now that there is more light. Make sure that they get plenty of water though.

The mound on top is for when they grow for a bit longer rather than when planted. It is called earthing up. When the shoots get to be about 20cm or so long cover them up with soil leaving about 10cm and keep doing this.
