Cooking apples

My two children and their friend from accross the road just came in and said they had apples. They'd been next door and asked for some off their tree, he said take whatever you want as we never eat them anyway, so they brought home a carrier bag full lol
unfortuantly they didn't know they were cooking apples and that there yuk to just eat so it's apple pies all round lol

The apples are small, not really ready for picking but is there any reason why I shouldn't cook and eat them? Hate to waste them all

It's far too early for apples, given that you are only just starting to pick your strawberries (mine were finished 2 months ago). I shouldn't think they would be worth doing anything with. They may not be cookers at all, just way underripe eaters.

About the post from the guest, I think that is a good enough reason that people shouldn't be able to post until they have registered.

I think they'll be fine once they're cooked up (but maybe start with some smaller pies and give it a day or two to ensure no problems before gorging yourselves!).

Are there any apples left on the tree? If so, it would be worth waiting until a bit later in the season to see how they develop.

they are definatly cooking apples as he gave us some last year properly ready. I'm going to do a pie and see how it goes as I haven't been able to find any reason not too. Or may make some jam... I could get some strawberries in the market on friday... strawberry and apple jam mmmmm
