Cabbage Seedlings are a bit droopy....

Post: # 53001Post mew »

Hi

I planted up some cabbage seeds and left them in the greenhouse (unheated) and they germinated about 12 days ago and have been coming along a treat.

When I came home last night I noticed that all but two had really wilted. Im not sure why this happened. The only thing I can think of is that it was too sunny in the greenhouse. The top of the soil did look a bit dry admittedly but didnt seem too bad about 1cm down. I took them inside and watered them and have left them on my windowsill so they are out of "direct" sunlight.

Will have to sow some more this evening - any tips on where Ive gone wrong and why this has happened and what i need to do to prevent this from happening again?

Many thanks as always

Sounds like it might be "damping off", a fungal infection. Don't worry - you've got time to start again! Have a read of the page to see if it sounds right, and how to stop it.

Gidday

Yeah at my age I know the feeling.

But seriously, I would say that Hedgewizard is probably right.

I agree with the other two, although if they recover it may just be lack of water. If it IS damping off they will not recover, but will fall over and look pinched at the soil surface.

Thanks guys and gals

I think you're probably right, when I got home last night the other two had followed suit.

Ive sowed some more and left them in my windowsill.

Any tips on how to avoid failure this time round?

Thanks
