gday
i've been doing self-sufficiency for about twenty eight years, since buying my bit of the mallee in 1979. i've got one human companion (we're in a non-sexual pair-bond), a dog, three cats, chooks and goats, both milkers and angoras. i've turned pagan (druid) and i'm working consciously with fairies, ("for joy and for fun" as the song goes). i used to write articles for grass roots magazine about hand-spinning and native medicinal herbs and other topics under the name vivienne manouge, but that was a few years ago - late eighties, early nineties. we've got some solar panels for laptops and cd players, but i still use candles for light and a fire for warmth and indoor cooking. we've got a solar oven made from recycled stuff, a solar cooker for making tea, and an adobe wood stove and oven for overcast days. no tv - aren't we lucky! there's a productive orchard and gardens. we make all our own wines from our own fruit, and mead from raw honey purchased locally. we often sing folksongs together in the evenings. we're happy. i'm joining this list just to make contact noises with anyone else out there...

thanks for the welcome everyone.
millymollymandy, the mallee is a very large area in the southern part of australia where the dominant tree species are several kinds of small, multi-stemmed eucalypts, the sort they get eucalyptus oil from. it's a sparse, semi-arid scrub-land, full of wildlife - kangaroos, wombats, echidnas and small marsupials, many reptiles, unique bird-life and many wildflowers adapted to arid conditions. here's a photo taken from my office doorstep.
if you click the small photo it will take you to a bigger one. it looks especially beautiful in the early morning light.
