Stop this senseless Slaughter

Every year, 20,000 dolphins are killed off the coast of Japan and by petitioning the Japanese Government to act against this slaughter we may be able to make a difference. These barbaric killings are subsidized by the sale of live dolphins by fishermen to the international aquarium market, which pays upwards of $45,000 for specimens to be used in dolphin shows and swim-with-dolphin entertainments. Right now American aquarium specialists are buying 12 bottlenose dolphins for the Ocean World amusement park in the Dominican Republic.

I think the trade and slaughter of dolphins is wrong and should be stopped immediately. If you think so too please support our petition to the Japanese government with your online signature:

Hi from downunder, The NZ Government has been petitioning the Japanese Government for years in regards to whaling in the Southern Ocean. The Japanese give financial help to small countries, ie, Pacific Islands, so that they will side with Japan. It will be a long struggle to try and persuade Japan to give up this wanton killing. Even Greenpeace have not made much headway. Let's hope that this petition will help.

Hi from downunder, On the tv news last night was an article on a whale that was stranded in a bay in Japan. Some fishermen had gone out in two boats to help it. The whale became alarmed and started thrashing around. The two boats were upturned and one fisherman died. The whale must have recognised some of the fishermen as cuzzies to the ones out in the ocean that were doing all the killing.

So sometimes I am too cynical for my own good ... over the years I have been asked to sign literally hundreds of these online petitions at petitiononline.com which is a cottage industry within itself. None that I have seen have had any timetable to be presented to whichever government they are aimed at - they just sit online, in some cases for years and years and years ... and go nowhere. They don't ever actually get presented.

So when is this petition being formally presented to the Japanese government? What organisation is behind it? While I understand the sentiment behind it, and support the cause, I actually need to know that this is going to do some good, and that the people behind it have a clear timetable for formal presentation to the Japanese government. There is nothing I can see on the web page that says anything about this.

yeah, so I am cynical, but I have simply never seen any of these petitiononline.com petitions actually go anywhere. They are feel good petitions, but not do good petitions?

While I can see that that would be the case for SOME of the online petitions it's really rather unfair to categorise ALL of them as being the same.
The petition will be sent to the Japanese government when all the comments have been reviewed. There is no organisation behind the petition that I provided the link to - just some chap in Portugual who wanted to do something about the atrocity that is going on off the coast of Japan.
Will the petition do any good?
Probably not - but that's no reason not to sign it in my book.
