Okay, well, I've started getting my things together, at last. It'll take a few weeks to get everything, but if I do it right, then there'll be less inclination for me to give up!
Most of my stuff is "somewhere" in storage (my tools etc), but they were for container gardening and not of the best quality anyway. I've managed to get permission to take over a small area of my parents' garden so I'm incredibly happy about that!
I'm going all organic with my seeds etc, just as I did last time - but of course, having an actual garden will be interesting.
Money was a bit short this week, so I just bought a couple of packets of seeds. Next week, I think I will buy a compost bin to get started. I saw a relatively simple one for $30 at Bunnings yesterday.
Does anyone know about the weed mat? Is it worthwhile? Is it expensive? I've never heard of it. Anyway, I've been reading Jackie French's book Backyard Self-Sufficiency. It mentions it in there.
Gee - whilst on the topic of her book - she makes it all sound so easy doesn't she? It's crazy!
So planning away and slowly getting my materials together seems to be the way to go for me at the moment. I want to set my garden up so it has produce year round, not just for a few months and then dead....

Okay MMM, the books says that you lay this mat down on the grass & weigh it down (it's for a no dig garden - which the book says is better than a dig garden), cut some holes in it and plant your seedlings in the holes. You look after your plants etc, and the weed mat does the work to make the bed for you.... well, that's my understanding of it...
Right now would have been great to have the compost bin - we're up on the roof cleaning out the gutters. YUCKO, the stuff has been there so long that it has started to break down! It would have been great for the compost bin!!

Is that weed mat that black stuff? heavily woven plasticy stuff? I've seen it used under rock gardens/bark gardens etc to keep the weeds down. Apparently it is pretty good, but you still get weeds growing up through the holes you cut, so you do still need to pull a few weeds. Not nearly as many though.
Yeah, I used it around roses years ago and found it to be a bit of a pain, wound up removing it all!

Well then a darn good thing I didn't buy any!!
Actually, I was at my friends' house today... they have one of those above ground pools (just a plastic one) sitting in their yard. We were pulling long grass etc from its sides when we saw a GIANT worm! It seems there's some interesting happenings underneath that pool! Maybe that is what I need to do!!
