Mold solution in the home?

Post: # 46917Post Trinity »

Hi All...

Not sure exactly where this post fits best

We've got a little mold issue in our house. I understand this to be a moisture issue. I am looking for an alternative/natural solution to keeping it in check. Have heard that borax may be an option. Does anyone have any experience with this, or any other ideas?

Any insight much appreciated. Thanks.

Not sure about borax, but I have read that cloudy ammonia can be used to clean mould off stuff!

I have also read that mould on walls can be removed by using an allpurpose cleaner made from -

1 Cup bicarb soda
1 tablespoon of good quality or homemade washing up liquid, and
1 Teaspoon of lavender, teatree; lemon or lemongrass essential oil.

I have not tried this myself though.........

Hope this helps

I have the same trouble in my kitchen, will give it a go cheers nev. I thought of perhaps trying white vinegar as well.

As well as dealing with the actual mold itself, you also have to deal with the cause of it.

Where abouts is it and what type of mold? Black spots? This normally indicates condensation, and can be the result of lack of ventilation. But anything else might merit further investigation.

Thanks, Nev! We'd had a box sitting up against the wall in our bedroom all winter, and when I was clearing things out over the weekend, I found a big patch of mold on the wall behind the box. Your recipe works!

Thank you for the advice :flower:
I'll give it a whirl.
We do often leave the windows open to allow the air to circulate (when it's freezing, we just leave them ajar mind you) and have brought a good dehumidifier into the home when realising that there may be a moisture problem, but still finding 'black spots' abound... particularly around the windows. Hmmmm... will keep chipping away with it, perhaps I need to keep the windows ajar all of the time?
Until a couple of yrs ago I spent a lot of my winters in the rainforest region of Maui. The windows were constantly open allowing the air to circulate, yet, some kind of mold (orangy coloured) persisted relentlessly, despite the abundant circulation...
