growwing cress
growwing cress
Hi Has anyone read anything about the dangers of growing cress on kitchen towel. I am sure i have seen something but I can't find it. Surly kitchen towel or blotting paper has a bleach or chemicals in it. Is ther an alternative besides having to fill containers with compost. Too cold to go outside in the winter. I thought i had seen some kind of grow mat, that is reusable. I grow a lot of sproating seeds and cress and need a safe method. Appreciaate any advise thanks.

Haven't grown it since I was about 6, but we used to grow it on an old flannel (face cloth) on a plate. Pretty sure that you only need something that will hold the water without flooding the seeds, so any bulky fabric would probably do.

I've just started growing cress again. Initially I sowed a few seeds into a small pot of seed compost which I keep on my kitchen window sill. When I harvested the first lot, I then sprinkled some more seeds in the same pot. By the time I had eaten the first batch, the second was well on its way.
I have also sprinkled some seeds around the base of a basil plant in a pot on my window sill. The cress seedlings look much nicer than the bare soil and can be harvested easily as they don't reach the first branches of the basil. Layer planting on a tiny scale.
So now I have two pots going, one growing and one ready for harvest.
