A few minutes ago on Radio 2, Chris Evans took a phone record request from a woman who said that, as a result of a daft conversation at work today, they had all chosen which song they'd like played at their funeral. The woman in question chose Mudd's 'Tiger Feet' because it would make people jump to their feet and dance.

Chris Evans replied that he'd already chosen his funeral song because he wanted everyone "to cry and pretend they really liked me".

It got me wondering ... what song or piece of music would other Ishers choose, and why?

I chose that one for my dad's funeral. It was playing in my car when I was driving up from Brighton to see him the day before he died. Always fills me with happy sad tears... lots of happy memories but sad that I can't give him a hug.

Yes - I'm 27, but knew what I wanted years ago!

I want two songs to be played. Firstly, the 1812 overture, followed by Smash by The Offspring. In case you don't know the lyrics, here's the chorus...

I have been told when discussing this with others that it's probably not the best track to have playing at my funeral. The lyrics are apt though. Maybe I should change my wish to be 'Nimrod' by Elgar.

I will also wish to arrive late (bad pun, I know) as I'm always late. I don't like hearses, so want to be pulled along in a trailer. I will have a purple cardboard coffin decorated with silver tinsel. In with my corpse, I want a jar of Patak's garlic pickle, a can of Spitfire and some teabags.

Then I would like a tree to be planted above me; poplar, oak or chestnut.

I'd read somewhere a long time ago that one firm in England were offering 'green' funerals where the dead person would be buried in a cardboard coffin, then have a tree planted over them. The idea was that the burial ground would at some point recreate natural woodland, as a variety of tree species would be planted at different times. I quite liked the idea, but as far as I know, nothing like that is done in France.

I gotta say... I think that music played a funerals scores right off the scale of the naff-o-meter. Just think of Elton John at Lady Di's.

Besides, why would I want to choose music for my own funeral - I'm not going to be able to hear it. Much better to choose it for while I'm still alive.

I quite agree, Stew. But, just in case a mistake has been made and I'm still alive, I'd like to hear those songs. I'm not sure of how long it takes between death and disposal in the UK, but it's very quick here. If there was a strike going on at the time, my resuscitation may go unnoticed...

We found a site recently that offered very funky pod shaped bio-degradable coffins - I def want one of those - and a nice big tree planted on top of me. I think I'd go for somehting like a cherry tree or an apple tree so that its fruit could be eaten. I'm not sure about what music Id have but it would have to be happy stuff and probably a really silly song, like Rolf Harris the Court if King Caracticus to make people laugh!!! And no one is allowed to wear black - unless like the fee fairy its velvet with big funky bootts!!!! Afterwards I think I'd like a huge celidh (is that how to spell it?) with lots of dancing and home brew!!! Pitty I wont be there to join in the fun tho!!
