An allotment is rather like a comunity garden it is a patch of land that people rent for a small fee to grow fruit and veg on.

Welcome, Eek -- I'm from the states, but haven't lived there in a while; we emigrated to New Zealand a few years ago, and love it here, and as a shameless anglophile, and lifelong fan of BritComs, I no longer have any need for most translations (though there are some Kiwi ones we'd never heard before!).

Kiwi thing that always got to me was 'lollies' - lollies here are sweets on a stick.. there they are sweets? i think...
