Hello folks ! FINALLY got around to registering onto the site, I found I was spending too much time on Downsizer and River cottage, so what I needed was another distraction, and i've found it !
My names Dave,im 46, married, two children, worked in engineering since i left school, I've got an allotment, make my own wine and beer , shoot, (vermin and clays) have a workshop at home where i restored my 1982 Range Rover, make ornamental ironwork and 1 off engineering projects.

Hello Dave and welcome to the site. Do you have any piccies of your ironmongery to share with us? I've got an uncle (also called Dave, funnily enough) who's a blacksmith and he's done some lovely bits of work in that medium, hence my interest in seeing other samples.

I have a 20 year old copy of C J J Berrys " First steps in winemaking" and this has never let me down.......... but, i have just made 3 gallons of elder flower using the recipie on here !
Also got a lager kit from my kids for fathers day !!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm intersted in blacksmithing too, I made a forge and anvil and years ago was able to mget hold of an engineers leg vice for the scrap price! I ma in the process of setting up my smithy but, same as you, getting time to play in it is another thing!

Best way to post pics is to upload them to a hosting site (www.photobucket.com seems a good one), and then link to them in your message - get it right, and the images will appear as if by magic. Have a look at this thread

I uploaded a pic from my pc to my aol hometown area, then copied and pasted the url and put it on a practice thread here. Clicking on the Img button, typing in the url and the closing the url by clicking on the Img button. (top right, second box in above this box)

Clear as mud? Yeah, I'd never make a teacher!

I've got Berry's book too. Trouble is I've never made a wine that's actually drinkable so gave up. The dandelion was particularly disgusting.
All this talk of wine making is perking up my interest again but I gave away all the equipment. Must admit I prefer a good Australian Shiraz - but that's not actually very self-sufficient is it.

What the hell are Img's and Url's Shiny? I don't have a clue what you're talking about and I feel I should as I havn't been able to post a picci because the file size was too big.

There is a better explanation on another thread about inserting pics in the text box. I 'll try and find it.

Img's is short for Image and URL is a web address ie: www.selfsufficientish.com.

I apologise for being a bit of an anorack.

I did manage to suss out Img but not url. What do the initials actually stand for.
I've only had a computer for 18 months and, being a bit of a wrinkly, want to learn as much as poss so I can be an anorak too even if it's only to astound and amaze my son - who only got into computers because he thought 'my God - if mum can do it - so can I'.

Uniform Resource Locator, which to my mind is no help at all, since it's still not obviouse what it means.

There are various online computing dictionaries like this one.

Thanks for that link Stew. I checked out a few of the pages. Enough to give one mental indigestion (or constipation) I fear. It'll be useful for me though - total dork.

My son was the subject of 'progressive' education and, as a consequence, left school with very little going for him. I'm glad to say that since he got his computer he's now trading successfully on e-bay and 'flying'.
