I would like to suggest the self-sufficient gardener by john seymour for any begining gardeners , it in the same format as the complete book of self-sufficiency .
ebay is quite a good place to buy , although Ive found quite a few copys and given them away to friends at my local carboot sale.

john jeavons is a very good gardener too

I found his Complete Book of Self Sufficiency at The Book People (www.thebookpeople.co.uk) and I have been riveted. Even if you don't have acres it is a fabulous read and very inspiring. He goes from small garden right up to acreage. RRP £20 and they are selling it for £6.99 (plus p&p of course).
