Hello all.
I found this site when googling for a cider recipe 3 months ago and as I have been a frequent visitor since then, thought I should introduce myself.
I’m 40 and live in Lancashire, where I enjoy a semi-rural existence.
I’m a keen environmentalist and prefer a walk in the woods to a trip round the shops.
(Luckily, there’s a wood adjacent, full of nature’s bounty.)
I also have a small vegetable plot, a couple of greenhouses and a chicken pen.
I enjoy good food but don’t enjoy paying for it!
Ethical and environmental considerations apart, I believe that homegrown or foraged grub tastes better and saves me money aswell.
My next project is micro-generation and I plan on building a wind turbine for a start.
I’ve already picked up some good tips and inspiration from this site and look forward to sharing anything I can bring to your forum.

Thank-you for you kind welcome, ee by-gum.
Shirlz2005- My cider is taking longer because I have the temp. a bit low. It looks good so far though. I'll let you know if it's worth the wait.

Aye up and welcome to the forum, I read something the other day about a forager who was arrested for theft. A security guard took down his registration and rang the police after seeing him pick some rowan - what a @**@er. Never been stopped myself and I think he was just unlucky.

Arrested for foraging?
It's advisable to have the landowner's permission to forage.
About 3 years ago, my friends and I had use of a rundown cabin and spent two days fixing it up and generally making it fit for habitation.
Unfortunately, the landowner neglected to inform his neighbouring farmer of our arrangement before he went on holiday.
On the third day of our stay we were surrounded by farmworkers at gunpoint and ordered off the land. (You dont argue when they have guns!)
We packed up and hiked out to our car, but only got a few miles before the police stopped us.
We were all arrested for burglary and tresspass and taken to Skipton nick.
It took a couple of hours for the police to confirm our permission, as the owner was abroad on holiday.
When the police released us they told us that we had been very lucky; normally the local farmers sort things out without involving the police, usually by dangling them in the river upsidedown for the night etc.
I have to say though- the cops were great, and offered to find us somewhere else in the area to continue our little camping trip- we declined.

Excellent! If that is not a very good reason to get permission then I don't know what is.DrSlippers wrote:It's advisable to have the landowner's permission to forage.

It is slightly different when you are used to urban foraging I have never heard of a council hanging people upside down for the night. Well only metaphorically speaking anyway.
