Hello there. This is an excellent site. Other self sufficient sites I have looked at have been in the US, wide open spaces and log cabins and all of that. It works here too, save the planet and save money. I looked at a post here showing the loony prices for commercial solar water heating, why not build your own? I have looked into this and have started out on a project. I also like the idea of running the electrics on 12v, but some of these ideas will be of more use when I move. I run a motor caravan, it is surprising how long you can survive with 2 100ah batteries and how little water and gas you need to live well (on holiday). 12v compressor fridges and very good 12v lighting are available. A wind turbine and large solar panel and more batteries could work well in a well insulated small home. Also like woodburners etc.

wotcher! - got a caravan myself, and when we tootle off to somewhere like the Big Green Gathering we run everything we need off 12v - this year we took a small wind turbine with us, and it kept 4 people in power (2 small caravans), and we had loads to spare!
