Hello to other self sufficientishers
I’ve been reading this site for a couple of weeks now after stumbling across it. Lots of really interesting stuff! It is good to hear about so many like minded people and ideas. Too bad you are mostly all on the other side of the world!
I grew up on a small organic farm aiming to be reasonably self sufficient and environmentally friendly, so have always had this mindset - but, I think people have always thought I am a bit weird.
Recently my boyfriend and I have bought a house, it has a small section and is in a small town – not quite the farm I wanted. But we are growing as much as we can – ripping up flower beds and lawn to do so! We reuse everything we can, thus don’t create much rubbish – we have been here two months and haven’t had a to put a rubbish bag out yet (just the recycling box). We hope to have a farm one day, but for now we are trying to be as self sufficientish as we can!

Thanks for all the warm welcomes. Finally put the rubbish out this week! will try to last more than two months this time! We don't accumulate all that many cartons (did you mean plastic or cardboard??) Hardly any card ones and they all go on the fire or the compost bin, or get written on or something like that. And plastic containers from olivio spread and things like that - well so far we haven't accumulated enough to use for keeping things in in the fridge and seed trays etc. We make yoghurt and hummus, and things like that so any containers we do have we just fill up again. Going to make our own beer soon, so we are collecting wine bottles for that (we have a friend from Wales coming to visit this week so that should increase our wine consumption a bit!). We borrowed a rubbish bin which my dad uses to make wine for our beer. Wine will be our next thing - need to wait till grape harvest though so we can get some free grapes. We planted some from cuttings this season but they will be a couple of years off - they are looking healthy though, lots of new shoots. Yummmm wine....

Let us be lovely
And let us be kind
Let us be silly and free
It won't make us famous
It won't make us rich
But damn it how happy we'll be!
