Shelling an egg...

Post: # 38333Post shiney »

Daft question I know..but I am in the middle of a pickled egg making spree. I have done two lots now but is it just me or are some egg shells a pain in the neck to get off when, you hard boil them?

Anyone got any tips or info on why some egg shells just peel off like butter and others can drive you bonkers by sticking to the egg or pulling it off in big chunks.
If in doubt ~ use a hammer!

it's all to do with age Shiney

A very fresh egg likes to keep onto it's shell, where as one that is a few days old is easier...

I use my older eggs for hardboiling!

yes they are. Like Shirley said it's because they are fresh.

Ah thanks everyone!

I thought maybe because they were older! Next time I'll hang on to them a little longer before boiling them for pickling.

Hi Shiney

I had this problem a little while ago, consulted my mother and she gave me a very useful tip

Before you try peeling roll the egg either in your hand or on a surface so that the shell cracks all around then peel it loosens the shell so that you don't struggle

I have tried this method and it really works

G'Day Shiney mate!

I have found that taking the egg from the hot water and running under cold water makes them easier to peel too!
