Oops, too many jobs and forgot dinner!

Post: # 37039Post Stonehead »

It's been a bit of a busy day - topping with the scythe, cutting a new fenceline with the scythe, moving the electric fence, weeding in the veg patch, lifting jerusaleum artichokes, picking squash, doing all the animal chores, cleaning the kitchen, doing updates to the blog, entertaining the boys, repairing tools, doing the washing and so on.

Then, I suddenly thought - that's funny, it's a bit dark out. Looked at the time 6.15pm. Argh. Forgot to put dinner on! It was supposed to be casseroled pork and takes three hours to cook.

So what I am doing? Well, when you have a problem I always think it best to sit down with a cuppa and do something else rather than worry too much. Something will sort itself out in due course.

Hmm, I wouldn't be surprised if, in a previous life, I was the one who annoyed Zeus by telling Asopus the whereabouts of Aegina!

I forget to get the dinner on sometimes. I don't do all the great and good things you do on your smallholding, but I still get distracted by everyday stuff!

Pasta with the good old tinned tomato sauce is always a quick meal, or a nice omelette.

I've done that before, too many times  and yep we normally end up having pasta  or I'll be searching through the freezer hoping there's something to reheat or a pizza left from the last batch

Thank heavens for microwaves!

I whipped some of our Vaguely Cajun sausages out of the freezer, thawed them in the microwave in 10 minutes, then fried them. Add chips (from Catriona tatties), fried eggs (ours) and a tin of baked beans, and the boys were absolutely delighted. Phew!

And it wasn't too bad if I say so myself!

Note to self: Sunday - remember to put casserole on by 3.30pm!

Well, I did the get dinner cooking roughly on time today and it's smelling very, very good.

(Browned the joint in the big casserole, then removed it. Then gently fried off chunks of shallots, garlic and carrots before adding white wine vinegar, brown sugar, coriander, pepper and cinnamon. Reduced this, put the joint back on top and then in the oven at 180C. In a minute or two, I'll take it out of the oven and add chunks of jerusalem artichokes, potatoes and pumpkin, then return to the oven for another hour. Then remove the joint, stir in some stock and thicken with a roux. Then slice the joint and serve with the veg and sauce.)

Added the extra veg, but the flavour needed a little more depth and oomph. So, soy sauce or worcester sauce? In the end, I went for a dash of soy so we'll see how it turns out...

Managed to do lunch OK but forgot the Hugh FW guesses his temperatures (he has an aga) - I ususally add a gas mark. Not today. The chook was still pink in the middle so we had to eat the meal french style, veg first, meat last!

We forgot the tea though - I was busy making the worm bin up and Witchypoo was forking over a spot we want to sow some forage peas into. Poor Harry had to come and get us!
