Self Sufficiency in Ireland Farmhouse,Smallholding Available

Post: # 36142Post irishmist »

Just like to say helllo to all and to mention that the old place on the Hill in County Clare, Ireland is now available again for the right people who perhaps want to "test the water" and try a year in Rural Ireland. This time of the year you would go outside to take in the air after dark and feel that you could almost reach up and touch the Milky Way http://irishmist.co.uk please take a look. Rather than try to profit we aim to make the place available to people at a price that only covers the costs of keeping it going. Its a gentle place to live and has acted as a steping stone to others who have gone on to settle and smallhold in Ireland. People have said that it has allowed them to really make a good decision before making a long term commitment themselves. If anyone needs any help or advice about moving to Ireland please post your questions here or feel free to contact me and I'll do my best to give accurate information. Ireland is truly a wonderful place to live where one can feel free from the confines. Ireland was recently assessed to have the best overall quality of living in the World http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/4020523.stm I certainly don't take any convincing. I am not weathy but neither am I wanting to go down the path of turning this lovely old place into a holiday let and make more money. Its a place for a Family to live and experience and I really prefere to keep it that way. At the end of the day I would sooner make friends than money but have to ensure the continuity of the place. I charge 200 euros per week for the Farm House and 2.5 acre smallholding on a year up front basis. There are no property or Council taxes to pay so only bottled gas/fuel and utility bills are applicable. The 3 bedroomed Farm House is South facing and has its own deep water well and a polytunnel plus a lovely atmoshere! There are good employment opportunities in and around the area (Shannon and Limerick). I am no expert on anything but I know what I know and am happy to share it so I welcome any comments and will try my best to answer any questions.

My apologies,

How ignorant of me to omit an entire Continent.

I am off outside now to thrash myself with damp nettles.

I put the UK but only because I am somewhat patriotic. I liked Ireland when I was there but only saw Dublin and don't feel I can judge a whole country on a drunken weekend.

I really liked Berlin when I visited and would be tempted to put Germany, saying that I loved Romania when I was there too. Having only lived in England I find it difficult to give a fully truthfull anwser. - If I could live out 240 lives in most of the countries of the world then I could, but short of living in an episode of star trek I can't see that happening

Anyway welcome to the site

Well, hello Irishmist. You didn't list Scotland either, which is separate from England, although is part of the United Kingdom, as is Wales.

For myself, although I am English, I prefer Scotland because where I lived in England was hoaching with folk, and where I live in Scotland is so peaceful and you can actually walk somewhere without treading on the heels of the person walking in front of you. (Unless you are my three-year-old daughter, who can tread on toes of the person across the street, but that's another story)

However, I would also vote for Australia, because I was brought up there till i was 11 years old, and have rose-tinted memories of blissful days of sunshine and doing pretty well nothing.

Welcome to SSish anyway

Welcome Irish Mist

I've always wanted to go to Ireland... my grandpa was born in Co Mayo and I really want to go and see it for myself.

I love the idea of what you are doing over there in Co Clare - it looks wonderful!

:welcomeish: too

County Clare is a truly lovely place in Ireland, there is much around to see and do. There is the lunar type landscape of the Burren the many lakes and rivers of the Clare Lakelands. Bunratty Castle is down the road from the Smallholding. Shannon Airport is only a 20 min Drive away. Limerick and Shannon also about 20 mins away. This time of the year horse mushrooms the size of a diner plate can be picked from the fields that surround the Smallholding. County Clare is known as the "music county" with a traditional festival each year in Feakle and the Miltown Mawby festival in late Summer. The market town of Ennis is a short drive away and great for a Saturday night musical pub crawl! The local village is called Sixmilebridge and is 4 miles from the smallholding. Famous village of Killaloe is also a short drive away. All in all its a nice part of the world to settle in. See some links below.

My apologies for making a cock up of the poll, I have alienated a good proportion of the world by the Countries that I left out. I'll put more effort in next time.

 'Alientated' isn't the best word - I think when we were pointing out the countries you left out, it wasn't because we were miffed - just saying is all. You certainly didn't alienate me :)
