Stuff that you plant to cover bare ground when you`re not using it. Then you dig it in when it`s grown to improve the structure of the soil and add nutrients etc. There are several kinds of things to use. The Organic Gardening catalogue has a list - or people on this forum have probably got excellent advice!

clovers are a good one as you can plant through it although I 've never done it my self.

I've got some onions down, gonna try to find some rye grass to put down as a green manure. Leek seedlings will go in soon as will broad beans and I'm going to risk some cabbages even though it is a little late. It's worth clearing a space to put down some soft fruit bushes or fruit trees. Late autumn and early winter are good for these as they will be dormant and moving them will be less of a shock to the plant.
