Hi,
My name is Natalie and I live in Sydney, Australia. I recently read an article on Peak Oil and started to think about all the things I take for granted in my environment. I have never really thought about it before, but have decided that I definitely need to become more self sufficient ISH, lol. I have absolutely no idea where to start and have already forgotten everything I've read over the last few days.
One thing I have noticed though - when I have mentioned peak oil and things like Global Warming to my family and friends they look at me like I've lost my mind. I feel like a crazy conspiracy theorist or something, lol. It would be great to chat with people who can help me to understand more about all the things I want to learn about.

Hi Natalie. You're not a crazy conspiracy theorist, the American government really is trying to cover this up 
Seriously, do some research and be sure of your facts. you don't have to memorise figures about how many billions of gallons etc., but try to find the arguments on both sides. And then chill out a bit when talking to your family. It's easy to do a Chicken Licken and of course people will switch off. But if you leave the subject alone unless it comes up naturally, and then mention practical solutions and benefits instead of rumours of death "What? Oh the new lightbulbs? Well I got them because they save a lot of money - over £50 over the life of the bulb, and I've got ten of them in the house. And did you know that if everybody in the country replaced just one lightbulb with a low-energy bulb, we could decommision a power station. Imagine the money the nation would save in buying oil, all our taxes would go down, and not to mention the reduction in pollution".
Sometimes we beardy greenies tend to focus on the negative "Peak oil! We're all going to die!! End of Western civilisation as we know it!!! We all have to give up our cars and our houses and live in yurts before it's too late!!!!" I think we should focus more on the positive individual benefits of green actions - saving energy means saving money, after all.
