Hello from Derby

Post: # 34192Post Merry »

Hello people. This site looks good! It would be great if it really is an `urban guide to almost self sufficiency`. I have felt a little bit uncomfortable on similar forums where EVERYBODY seems to be a small holder with a super cottage and a couple of acres. This was our dream for when we retired from teaching and engineering respectively. Unfortunately, the amount we`d get for our suburban semi would now only get us an unconverted barn in a field (if we were lucky.) But we`ve got a productive garden and allotment and try to tread as lightly as possible on the earth so I think we should be content with the riches we`ve got rather than hanker for what we can`t have.
I`ll have a wander round the site now!

Hi Merry, sounds like you've got the right attitude. No, we're not all crofters here. I live in a semi with the world's titchiest garden (actually I think my sister Steph has that honour), but a couple of chickens in it and 1/3 of an allotment. We hope to expand - maybe get a whole allotment, a couple more chickens, and perhaps bees. We dream of one day having 5 acres of our own, but I'm thoroughly enjoying what we are doing already.

Hi Merry

:welcomeish:

Your comment about being content with the riches we've got is such a good one!! If only more people felt that way.

Looking forward to getting to know you.

G'Day Merry,

Welcome to the gang! Yep, We live on 500m2 (Ithink a bit less than 1/8 of an acre - and 1/3 of that is house!) and are doing what we can too!

Hello there

When we first set up the site I only had a one bedroom flat and no garden and Dave (my brother and co-creator) had an allotment and a small garden. I now have an allotment and concreate back yard and dave has an allotment and a small back garden. This is why the urban guide to almost self sufficiency was named so. We both think that if everyone did there bit then it would reduce climate change and even stress levels.

There are some small holders on this fourm and we welcome them as well as urbanites. In short I think we have a well rounded and happy corner of the net.

So welcome :welcomeish:

Great! You seem to be a well mixed and motivated crowd. (I guess I can now say `we` instead of `you`.)
Thank you for your welcome .
I look forward to talking with you.
