"The Doomsday Code, airing on Channel 4 on 16th September at 7pm, Tony Robinson visits the United States, Middle East, the Mediterranean and Africa to uncover the realities behind the Book of Revelation.
With its apocalyptic imagery, the book of Revelation is one of the most known books of the bible. The Anti-Christ, The Great Tribulation and the blood-soaked Battle of Armageddon are all part of St John's terrifying vision of the end of the world.
According to a 2002 poll, 59% of Americans believe the events outlined in the Book of Revelation will happen. Called End Timers, they believe the rebirth of modern Israel marks the first in a sequence of apocalyptic signs of the End Times.
The End Timers also believe that the more natural disasters occur, the closer the world is to the second coming, and one US environmentalist tells Robinson that these millions of American End Timers therefore have no interest in halting global warming.
Tony Robinson ends his journey on the tiny Greek island of Patmos, where St John is said to have written the Book of Revelation after experiencing visions. He asks whether an entirely different reading of the book is possible when its historical context is taken into account, and whether in fact it was written by St John at all."

I'm not sure that "let's hasten the end"-timers are the majority in American Christianity. If the 2002 poll was a statistically valid sample (and it may be), you've still got a lot of shades of opinion to get through before before you get down to that subset who think the Left Behind series is brilliant theology (*) and who don't see any chance of oil running out or other global crisis situations before they get swept up on a luxury ticket "into the air".
Unfortunately, I probably wouldn't have a lot of influence on such people - long hair and an earring would disqualify me on the grounds of first appearances!

(*) A populist series of fictional books imagining a "pre-tribulation, pre-millennial" scenario; the writing is almost as poor as the theology... I get the feeling you wouldn't enjoy any of the numerous books in the series but, FWIW, neither did I
