veg identification question

Post: # 33561Post den_the_cat »

In my veg box this week I have something a bit strange;

its about the size of a small grapefruit and has yellow peel with regular orange stripes. I thought it was some type of squash so cut it open to peel it and then discovered its almost like a melon inside, Very white flesh with most of the inside taken up with yelolowish juicy segments with a pip in each one.

To confuse me even more it smells a bit like a cross between a cucumber and a melon, and tastes of not very much when its raw.

I would have been convinced its a not very nice melon except it was in the veg bag not the fruit one, and there's already a melon in that....

Any ideas what it is? I'm stumped on what to do with it.

Could it be a round cucumber?
Crystal Apple or Lemon?

that would be great. normally its fairly easy to at least know how to cook 'em even if you don't know exactly what it is, but I'd never even heard of round cucumbers :oops:

I have some seed ready for next year, give me a shout early next year and I can send you over a few if you like?

lol - thanks for the offer but sadly cucumber is about the only fruit/veg I really dislike.

That said, these seem nicer than the normal type.

Got myself in trouble at work again yesterday - big mouth syndrome - brought in two cukes to give to lady who gives me jam jars. She said "why would I need TWO cucumbers?" and without thinking I replied "one to wash, and one to wear". Didn't go down too well! Why does my mouth do these things to me?

I keep giving people (at least) 2 cucumbers but they usually make a fuss about it. Do they not realise that home grown cucumbers stay fresh for weeks in the fridge? :roll:

Well folks, I've heard that the round varieties are better for pickling and chutneying because they keep their crunch better. Any other advantages?
